Autumn Fudge Blog Series - Blog 1 - Facts About Autumn and Deanston Malt Whisky Fudge

Welcome to our Autumn Fudge blog series! In this series, we’ll be sharing information about our favourite Autumn Fudge Flavours. In our first blog, we’re discussing some fun facts about Autumn and our first Autumn Fudge flavour - Deanston Malt Whisky Fudge!

Did you know Autumn used to be called ‘harvest’? This was because the full moon closest to the Autumn equinox is known as the harvest moon. Up until the 1500s, the harvest moon used to help farmers harvest their crops during the Autumn.

When does Autumn start?

In the Northern Hemisphere, Autumn begins on September the 22nd and ends on December the 21st. In the Southern Hemisphere, Autumn lasts from March until May!

Why do leaves change colour in Autumn?

During Autumn, the length of daylight and alterations in temperate stop leaves going through the food-making process. Chlorophyll which creates the greenness in leaves breaks down, the green colours disappear and the yellow to orange colours are more visible.

Why do animals hibernate during winter?

Due to cold weather and less daylight, some animals including bears, hedgehogs and bats hibernate. Before hibernation, they will eat as much as possible and the stored fat will give them energy throughout winter while they hibernate. Sadly, us humans cannot hibernate but we think the next best option would be to curl up under a warm blanket with a hot beverage and a bar of our delicious Deanston Malt Whisky Fudge!

Deanston Malt Whisky Fudge

The colours of Autumn remind us of the wonderful amber spirit we add into our Deanston Malt Whisky Fudge. We take a generous volume of this 12 Year Old Spirit and hand beat it into our Butter Fudge Recipe.

When adding alcohol to Fudge, it’s really important to get the volume just perfect, add too little and the flavour isn’t apparent, add too much and the Fudge won’t set due to the inclusion of additional moisture to the mixture…it really is a fine balance!

Whilst “most” of the alcohol burns off when added, the reaction it has initially along with our hand beating to stretch the sugar crystals means that our alcohol-based Fudges are some of the smoothest out there!

This delicious whisky-infused fudge is the perfect combination of single malt whisky combined with the finest ingredients creating a wonderful, fresh honeyed sweetness fantastic for those autumnal months!
